Mathieu van der Poel

Cycling is in his genes. Mathieu van der Poel, Poupou's grandson and son of Adrie van der Poel, comes from a real cycling family. At the age of 28, he is one of the greatest cycling talents of today. Mathieu embodies modern cycling like no other. At his first Tour de France, it is now up to Poupous grandson, to continue the family history. At the official team presentation in Brest, the entire Alpecin-Fenix team will be wearing the jersey colours that his French grandfather once wore in the Tour de France. They want to pay respect to Poupou. In the 2023 Tour de France, stage 9 starts in Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, where Poulidor and his family lived. The stage will be taking the peloton to the iconic Puy de Dôme where - back in 1964 - Poulidor and Jacques Anquetil put down a legendary side-by-side battle, with the overall Tour de France victory as stake.

He is my little phenomenon and looks like me when I was young. That's incredible! Maybe he is a future winner of the Tour. It makes me proud to see him.

Raymond Poulidor

He is ready to take the lead

"My grandfather recognized my joy of cycling early on and he always said that me and David were more talented than he was. Today I wish he could be there and experience this moment together with our family. He dreamed of this for a long time, but I am sure he is proud as he always was. I am feeling delighted that we can pay an ultimate tribute to him in such an exciting way and that we will be able to say all together: „MerciPoupou“."

More than 45 years after his grandfather, Mathieu wants to follow in his footsteps. He has already proven that he can win big races. Now the sport of cycling awaits one of its greatest talents for its biggest race – the Tour de France.
